Losing weight is the Number 1 New Year's resolution for many people.

It's estimated that as much as 60% of the population is obese; that is, 20% above ideal weight for their given height. Moreover, the problem seems to be getting worse. Health Canada's National Population Health Survey, involving 13,400 Canadians aged 12 years or older, found that 30% of Canadians were overweight in 1994, a substantial rise from the 22% reported in 1990. Children and young adults are fatter than they had been 20 years ago. The Roche Canada survey found that 39% of Canadians exercise less than twice a week.
