Your Worst Nightmare is an attempt to answer the recent rash of senseless murders and abductions. Kids do not have to meet the person of their worst nightmare. The author begins by placing them in a classroom setting to make them feel that I'm right there in front of them, and that they are right there in front of me. To be one step ahead, the author does not beat around the bush but concentrates on certain topics like “keeping your eyes open”, when to stay put and when to run and why, bad habits, weaknesses, verbal self-defence...and much more. He also deals with the question of what to do when worst comes to worst.

Here are some important points about the book:

(1) The main message is that kids should avoid certain situations before they happen because the type of person that they are mostly likely to be up against is someone taller, heavier, and stronger than them.

(2) The usual notion of self-defence is that the victim has to defend himself or herself by physically trying to repel such an attacker after an attack has been launched. His book will also deal with that, but with the understanding that the information is to be used when there are no choices. Kids have to be made aware that there are choices on the street. They do not have to stand their ground and fight to the bitter end like the way it is done on TV and in the movies.

(3) He has redefined the word self-defence to include: running, walking away, hiding, and thinking before you act as well as dishing it out. The advantages of avoidance are obvious: you will be able to think more clearly, and you will have a better chance of getting away when there is no physical contact.

(4) To achieve this, he has provided kids with certain drills to heighten their audio and visual awareness. He also encourages his young readers to write to him about any nagging question that they might have.

Most of the information is applicable to adults as well, so do not let the clarity of his writing style fool you. It is this duality of benefits that makes Your Worst Nightmare an invaluable book for the family.
